What Is Biomedical Waste?
Biomedical waste refers to any waste generated during the diagnosis, treatment, or immunisation of humans or animals, along with related research activities. This includes human and animal tissue, used needles and syringes, soiled bandages, expired medicines, lab cultures, blood, body fluids, and sharp instruments.
The 4 Categories of Biomedical Waste
Earlier rules classified biomedical waste into 10 categories, but the 2016 rules simplified this into just 4 colour-coded categories to make segregation easier and more consistent across facilities.
1. Yellow Category
This is the largest and most varied category. It covers human and animal anatomical waste (tissues, organs, body parts), soiled waste such as dressings and bedding, expired or discarded medicines, and chemical waste from labs.
Disposal method: Incineration, plasma pyrolysis, or deep burial (in areas without incineration access). Chemical waste within this category may also be treated through encapsulation at an authorised hazardous waste facility.
2. Red Category
This includes contaminated, recyclable plastic waste such as IV tubing, catheters, urine bags, and syringes (without needles).
Disposal method: Autoclaving, microwaving, or chemical disinfection, followed by shredding and recycling through authorised recyclers — never through open dumping.
3. White Category
This category is reserved for sharps waste — needles, scalpels, blades, and other metal instruments that can cause cuts or needle-stick injuries.
Disposal method: Sterilisation followed by shredding or mutilation, then either burial in a concrete pit, recycling through a foundry, or encapsulation.
4. Blue Category
This covers glass waste (broken vials, ampoules, glass bottles) and metallic body implants.
Disposal method: Disinfection through autoclaving or chemical treatment, followed by thorough washing and recycling.
